Chart Reading Techniques: The Three Harmonies and Four Cardinals
The single most common mistake beginners make in Zi Wei Dou Shu is reading palaces in isolation. They see Wu Qu (武曲) in the Wealth Palace and conclude they'll be rich. They spot Tan Lang (貪狼) in the Spouse Palace and expect a fairy-tale romance. Then reality delivers a sharp correction — because isolated readings miss the full picture.
The Three Harmonies and Four Cardinals (三方四正, San Fang Si Zheng) is the first essential technique for moving from point-based reading to three-dimensional chart analysis. Master this, and you'll understand why ZWDS practitioners say: "A lone star tells no story; a lone palace renders no verdict."
Why Single-Palace Reading Fails
Imagine a doctor whose patient complains of a cough. A lazy doctor prescribes cough syrup and sends them home. A good doctor orders a chest X-ray, checks for fever, asks about recent exposures, and considers whether the cough indicates cold, pneumonia, or something more serious.
A single cough (one palace) could mean anything. Only by examining the surrounding systems (other palaces) can you reach an accurate diagnosis. In ZWDS, the San Fang Si Zheng framework tells you exactly which surrounding systems to examine.
The Structure of San Fang Si Zheng
For any palace you're analyzing (the "target palace"), the San Fang Si Zheng consists of:
The Three Harmonies (三方) — 120-Degree Triangle
Three palaces form a triangle around your twelve-palace chart, each separated by 120 degrees. These are the palaces that share energy with your target palace — their stars directly influence how the target palace manifests.
The Opposite Palace (對宮) — 180-Degree Opposition
The palace directly across from your target creates a tension-and-complement relationship. The opposite palace's stars exert powerful influence — sometimes as strong as stars actually sitting in the target palace.
Combined: The Four Cardinals (四正)
Together, the three triangle palaces plus the opposite palace give you four positions to examine for any single palace analysis. This is the minimum scope for any serious reading.
The Life Palace's San Fang Si Zheng: The Core Identity Network
The most important San Fang Si Zheng configuration centers on the Life Palace (命宮):
- Life Palace — your core self
- Career Palace (官祿宮) — how you express yourself through work
- Wealth Palace (財帛宮) — how you relate to material resources
- Travel Palace (遷移宮) — how the external world receives you
These four palaces form your fundamental life equation. They must be read together:
Reading the Network
Example 1: Life Palace has Zi Wei (紫微) — natural leadership. Career Palace has Qi Sha (七殺) — aggressive, pioneering career energy. Wealth Palace has Tian Fu (天府) — conservative financial management. Travel Palace has Tian Xiang (天相) — well-received publicly.
Interpretation: A strong leader who
